A handsome book! A treasure of vintage photographs and stories of women who dared to be different and wear pants. Women in Pants tells the stories of women from the 1850s to the 1920s who, motivated by comfort, self-expression, vocation, rebellion, feminism and politics, gender identity, romantic love and courtship or even necessity, broke away from the fashion norms of their time. Although the focus of the book is on women wearing pants, it includes wonderful portraits of individual women who a [...]

The title "Women in Pants" pretty much says it all: this book takes a look at the history of pants-wearing among women. In this day and age, the fact that women wear pants is pretty much taken for granted. I had never really thought about the topic very much before, so it came as a bit of a shock to realize that the acceptance of women wearing pants didn't happen overnight, but was a struggle that took decades. I was hoping this book would be a collection of mini-biographies. It wasn't, but it was still interesting if you are into the history clothing, or of women who wore pants before wearing pants was commonplace (mainly in America). Many of the women in the photos reproduced in this book were not identified — likely, in many cases, they were not identifiable — so biographies were unlikely to happen.

I read this as part of an assignment but I found it super interesting. This is not a part of history that many people are aware of. This so well documented that I had to believe that this topic of history must have had a greater voice than we are aware of.

This book was a fantastic and quick read. I think it is important that our generation know that it wasn't just one day in 1950's that women decided to wear pants but a long struggle with women and men on both sides of the debate. I loved the real pictures and quotes and just wished there was more. Hats(and skirts)off to Catherine Smith for this book.p.s Catherine, are you looking for another research assistant?

Hannah came home with a stack of fashion books one night. She knows my weaknesses. This was right below Nerds & Jocks, a book on menswear.
